The Best Blog Post Ever?

Thu Apr 12, 2007 at 12:54:35 PM PDT

I want to flag a post today by Josh Marshall, which is a remarkable summary of all of the multiple scandals swirling around our heads at the same time.  It explains, concisely, clearly, and with brutal effectiveness, how the attorney purge story, the "lost" email story, and the "voter fraud" story are all part of the same story, which must not be lost in the details.

That story might be summarized as The Republican War on Black Voters -- without any hyperbole.

The point is that, from the start, Mr. Rove has had as a core part of his electoral strategy a tactic of phony allegations of voter fraud by Democrats, in order to suppress voter-registration drives in minority areas, harass poor and minority voters, and to have a pretext to challenge close elections.  The final payoff is to prevent poor and minority voters from voting, to the extent possible.  That is why he was putting pressure on the US Attorneys in swing states: Everywhere, he wanted them to launch investigations of voter fraud by Democrats, or poor and minority voters, even where there was no evidence of it; indict Democratic, poor or minority voters for voting fraud, even when there is no real case, even when the voter's offense is clearly getting some paperwork wrong; and if possible, throw a few people in jail for minor violations of voting rules.

This is what he wanted the USA's to do.  The ones who wouldn't go along with this got canned.  The ones who did were spared.  And now we have the coverup.

Josh's post puts all of these pieces together in the smallest number of words imaginable, including the core case studies: South Dakota 2002, in which the Republicans did everything they could to trump up cases of voter fraud, eventually proven phony; and case studies of individual voters (please read the stories of Mrs. Prude and Usman Ali, whose lives have been destroyed by Karl Rove's myschief).

Show this post to anyone who claims the USA story or the "lost" email story is not a big deal.
